Samir
BSc (Hons) Computer Science for Cyber Security (with placement)
From a passion for computers to a future career as a software engineer, Samir has always been fascinated by technology.
Growing up in a household with a shared laptop, he was eager to explore programming and website development, laying the foundation for his future.
Samir is now in his final year of our BSc (Hons) Computer Science for Cyber Security (with placement) programme.
This is his story.

I’ve found computers and technology interesting for as long as I can remember.
My curiosity turned into a passion
"I grew up in a household where we shared a laptop."
"I taught myself basic programming and website development, and that curiosity quickly turned into a passion.
"When it was time to choose my GCSEs and A levels, computing was an obvious choice. However, I didn’t just stick to the classroom - I sought out opportunities to gain real-world experience.
"During college, I completed a digital work experience placement with HSBC, where I worked on a project and presented my findings to the HSBC team.
"That experience shaped my proactive mindset, something that has been key throughout my time at university."
Why I chose Bradford
"My older brothers recommended the University of Bradford to me."
"I chose the University of Bradford mainly because it's nearby, but my older brothers also studied here and highly recommended it.
"I first applied for Computer Science, but after being accepted, I saw that the Computer Science for Cyber Security course offered a placement year. This was an opportunity that really appealed to me. I switched courses, and it was one of the best decisions I’ve made."
Invaluable insights
"The first year was a highlight. Everyone was in the same boat, making it easy to bond and build friendships."
"One of my favourite modules was Enterprise Pro, where we worked with a real-world client to develop a project from scratch.
"Managing deliverables, documentation, and client expectations gave me invaluable insight into what it’s like to work in tech and cyber security in the real world.
"Of course, there have been challenges, particularly cryptography which required a strong grasp of advanced maths. But despite the demanding coursework, I made sure to take advantage of every opportunity Bradford has to offer."

Through the University I’ve attended a quantum summer school with GCHQ, and a year-long placement with one of Europe’s largest defence companies.
Standout placement experiences
"I’ve had a number of opportunities to gather experience and further my knowledge through the University."
"One of my standout experiences was attending a quantum summer school, funded by GCHQ.
"Out of thousands of applicants, I was one of just ten selected. Thanks to my proactive approach, my lecturers put me forward for the opportunity.
"That experience completely changed my understanding and perspective of technology and cyber security.
"Another major milestone was my placement year at BAE Systems. As one of the largest defence companies in Europe, BAE offers a huge variety of roles.
"I had the chance to work as a software engineer in the naval department.
"This involved developing mapping systems for specific clients, including bug fixing, pipeline systems, virtual machines, and automation improvements.
"While my degree gave me a strong foundation, my placement taught me so much about real-world problem-solving and working in a professional environment."
Placements give you the stepping stones to secure a job.
The benefits of a placement year
"One of the biggest benefits of doing a placement year is that it opens doors."
"I’m incredibly grateful to have secured a graduate job offer from BAE Systems, where I’ll continue in a similar role after I graduate.
"It’s rewarding to know that the work I did during my placement made a real impact, and I’m looking forward to building on that experience.

Looking ahead
"In the long run, I’m keeping my options open."
"While I enjoy software engineering, I’d love to expand my role into more cyber-focused work to fully apply what I’ve learned in my degree.
"I’m also interested in exploring international opportunities within BAE to gain a broader perspective on the industry."
Being proactive is crucial if you want to stand out from the crowd.
Advice to prospective students
"If you’re considering a degree in computer science or a career in tech, my biggest piece of advice is to be proactive."
"The best opportunities don’t just happen, you have to go out and find them. Whether it’s asking lecturers for advice or applying for internships, taking the initiative makes all the difference.
"That mindset has helped me secure work experience with companies like HSBC, Microsoft, and BAE Systems.
"It’s also led me to roles as a student ambassador and student rep, where I’ve had the chance to support fellow students and make a difference.
"These experiences even resulted in me winning awards for my contributions during my placement and my work as a student rep, which is something I’m incredibly proud of."
