Student Central's £2m revamp with new dry bar

Published:

The bar at the old Student Central at the University of Bradford was rumoured to be one of the longest in the country, meandering through several rooms and serving alcohol throughout.

Thanks to a £2 million refurbishment in time for Freshers’ Week (last week), the main area is now ‘dry’, serving a range of bubble-teas, milkshakes, smoothies and other assorted soft drinks.

This is in response to changing student trends, which show students today are drinking far less alcohol than they used to. So, while there still is a bar serving alcohol - BelowOne has also undergone a refurb - it is no longer front and centre.

University Vice-Chancellor Professor Shirley Congdon said: “This investment is particularly apt as we approach Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture, because it creates a place students can be proud of, it creates a sense of belonging and is symbolic of the difference we want to make as a university in the city and district.

“This is part of a wider programme of investments in the student experience, which also includes £1.6m library revamp and £600,000 on new IT equipment.”
