University of Bradford supports World Fair Trade Day on May 8

The University of Bradford is supporting World Fair Trade Day on May 8 (2021) by encouraging people to take part in the World Fair Trade Organisation photo challenge.

Beginning in September, we are also planning to run Fairtrade Friday tasting sessions on the last Friday of every month, with accompanying recipes online and special offers across our catering outlets.

University shops stock a wide range of products all year round using sole suppliers of Fairtrade and ethically sourced products. Our retail outlets aim to use suppliers that provide biodegradable packaging, our catering outlets recycle all cooking oils and our bars use environmentally friendly resources.

Additionally, we will be raising awareness via social media of the Fairtrade Foundation and its Climate Justice agenda, which calls on world leaders to commit to radical action that delivers real support for those already suffering the effects of climate change and tackles the root causes of the crisis.

Professor Shirley Congdon, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bradford, said: “We believe Fair Trade Day is an occasion to be celebrated. It helps raise awareness of the need for overseas workers to be paid fairly for the products they help make, and helps promote environmental and economic sustainability and a more ethical approach to trade in general, which is important in addressing issues like climate change.

“These principles are aligned with the University’s core value of equality, diversity and inclusion. Fairtrade is something we’re passionate about and will continue to support in the future.”

In February, the University backed Fairtrade Fortnight in conjunction with Fairtrade Yorkshire.
