Donating to scholarships and student support

Why give to a scholarship fund?

Our students are at the heart of our successes and aspirations, and your support will enable outstanding students in most need to commence or to continue their studies. The gift of education is arguably one that outweighs any other. Funding scholarships is therefore one of the most popular ways for Alumni and friends to give something back.

Many of our students are the first from their family to attend University and come from financially disadvantaged backgrounds. Scholarships are an important source of support and can help these students to overcome financial challenges and fulfil their potential.

"After my mum passed away during my final year, I was unsure whether I could finish my dissertation. With losing an income a master's wasn't an option. With this scholarship, I can continue my studies as my mum wanted and my dad won't struggle trying to support me."

"Thanks to this scholarship I was able to continue my academic studies at the University of Bradford and achieve a Master of Science degree in Human Resource Management.

"Receiving the Emerald Foundation scholarship has helped to alleviate the financial burden and made it easier to obtain and achieve my degree and goals. Reducing the financial concerns meant I could dedicate more time for studying and learning to gain better grades and retention of knowledge."

"Honestly, I just want to say from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU!!!

"I was worried about coming back this year due to financial issues but this has saved me. I wanted to continue doing all the extra stuff for the union as I love giving back to the Uni for everything it has given me and now thanks to this scholarship, I have time to ensure I give it my all.

"Receiving the scholarship means I can use my loan to cover my rent and living expenses for the year. It means that I no longer have to work as much at the bars in order to afford to live and study here. The extra time I can now use to study for my course as well as invest in carrying out the responsibilities that I have within the student union, where I hold 9 different executive roles in the Sports and Societies areas. The extra time also means I can spend training at swimming and water polo, this is a major boost for my mental health. "

"I am an Iranian refugee who moved to the United Kingdom in 2009. I studied English and went on to study gym instructing, personal training, and a year of BTEC science. In 2019, I took an entry-level course to prepare for university. Due to the pandemic, I didn’t attend University until 2021, when I applied to attend the Chemical Engineering course. The combination of physics, chemistry, and arithmetic appealed to me. There are many small threads that have come together to lead me to this topic.

"I need more time to study or compose essays because English is my second language, and this scholarship also allows me to concentrate on my studies rather than worry about financial aspects. The grant has assisted me in purchasing books, printers, a laptop, a tablet, and summer course expenses. My mental health has improved as a result of this assistance.

"I'd like to express my gratitude to the donors of the Bradford Futures Fund for your generous support. Your assistance is greatly appreciated."

"I left my birth country back in 2010 and arrived in the UK in June of that same year. Unfortunately, my asylum was at first refused, but in 2013 the Home Office granted me a limited leave to remain after I formed a family here in Bradford.

"Receiving this scholarship means a lot to me, it is an opportunity that is not given to everyone. I would not have been in a position to self-sponsor my studies due to my limited income, without the scholarship I would have had to give up my ambition of completing my academic journey. Thanks to this scholarship, I can get the degree that will position me in society and I will be an asset in the job market.

"I would wholeheartedly like to thank the University of Bradford and its donors for their generosity by giving a chance to people whose access to education is shut due to the current system in place. Your actions are changing lives like mine to better themselves in achieving something great in education and life."

"This scholarship has impacted my life in a very positive way as an asylum seeker here in the UK. Accessing higher education and building a professional career has given me hope to achieve my dreams in life, and not feel abandoned as other asylum seekers can feel.

“I was born and raised in Peshawar, a city that faces hostility from the Tehreek-E-Taliban. Over the years they have destroyed the city’s infrastructure, and instilled psychological fear in the inhabitants of Peshawar. The Taliban were also a constant major threat to the female education system.

“I was lucky to grow up in a household where education was considered a necessity for life. My parents got me enrolled in one of the best schools in Peshawar, but unfortunately having the freedom of education would not last long. In 2009 a bomb near my school killed 100 people. Attacks from the Taliban continued, leading to the closure of educational institutions and women being confined to their homes.

“The Taliban proceeded onwards with their goal to disrupt education for girls. This led to the deadliest attack ever on a school in any country in history. In 2014, I was in a lecture room, and then out of nowhere the streets of Peshawar were filled with the sound of ambulance sirens. This attack took 145 lives – the majority of those of students.

“Instead of dreaming of my future career every night, I got used to nightmares filled with fear and dread. This impacted not only my education but impacted me psychologically

“Many girls of my age decided to join Madrasas – Islamic religious schools - which were relatively safer, but I could not allow myself to give up on my plans. My enthusiasm, determination, and motivation to pursue higher education was strengthened by the idea that I would be taking a stand to support all girls who faced cultural gender discrimination to their right to education.

“In 2016 I succeeded in gaining admission to an engineering college. I worked with a group of girls to create ‘WIE; Women in Engineering’. The purpose of this group was to empower women in the field of Engineering. This marked the start of my journey to help make women future leaders, and in our first year we arranged a public seminar, ‘EFFE: Empowering Future Female Engineers’. By 2017, I started training the junior girls and encouraged them to learn documentation, communication, and governance skills, so that WIE could be taken onwards by the next generation of students.

“I went on to successfully completed my bachelor’s degree in civil engineering with good grades, but I am especially proud of my work at this time to make myself and other girls aware of their self-worth and their right to make their own choices whether about their own career or any other aspect of life.

“This scholarship is not only beneficial to me in terms of higher education but will help me to grow as an individual.

“I am incredibly grateful to you for creating this scholarship, for providing an opportunity to talented and passionate students from Pakistan to pursue their higher education at this prestigious institution.

"Thanks to you, the lifelong dreams of many under-privileged Pakistani students will be fulfilled.”

"I am very thankful to the Bestway Foundation for the opportunity this scholarship has given me. It has infused motivation in me to work selflessly for benefit of others; similarly to how the donor of this scholarship did to us.

"The financial capacity of my family could not have afforded the tuition fee of the university as an international student. This scholarship eased this burden and took my mind away from the worry associated with raising the funds for my schooling, thereby providing giving me the platform to concentrate on my academic work.

"Studying a course in Cyber Security will help me to learn techniques and procedures in order to protect the different organization and their asset of my country from cybercrime attacks. After successfully, completing my degree in cyber security I plan to establish an institute to benefit my community from the latest security threats and vulnerabilities."

“I am extremely honoured and thankful to be one of the recipients of the Bestway Foundation Scholarship. Thanks to your generous support, I am not only the first in my family to study abroad, but I also hope to be an inspiration for the families back in my hometown, with similar underprivileged backgrounds. As I have been able to come to the UK to study, they now look up to me as a role model, especially the female students. Being able to pursue my educational ambitions would not be possible without this scholarship.

“Pursuing higher studies at the University of Bradford has provided me with a chance to enhance my knowledge and my skills by studying with a diverse group of people. I want to take it to the next level where I can make a more meaningful impact on my society. I want to put my efforts into research in computer science, as well as the empowerment of women in higher education in Pakistan. Thanks to the support from The Bestway Scholarship where higher education is normally just a dream for girls like me, this has become a reality.”

"Without this scholarship, I would not have continued in further education given the fees incurred from my undergraduate degree and the fees that I would have had to pay for an MSc and so for that I am entirely grateful.

"The scholarship has allowed me to learn new areas within my profession and use those skills to contribute to the work that I do inside and outside of work. I am the first generation of my family to reach this academic level and that alone is a huge achievement.

"There are people out there that just want the opportunity to shine but barriers such as fees often prevent them from reaching their true potential. Given the opportunity, those people can achieve great things and pave the way for the next generation.

"I will be forever grateful for this opportunity, thank you."

Our scholarship and student support funds

The Bradford Futures Fund supports those who might otherwise struggle to afford to study for a life-changing degree.

This fund supports promising home undergraduate students who are underrepresented within Higher Education through an annual scholarship of £1,500.

This additional support will be guaranteed for students for the entirety of their degree, helping to ease the financial burden and the anxiety this can create.

The Sanctuary Support Fund

At Bradford, we are proud to be a University of Sanctuary.

Refugee and asylum-seeking students often have major obstacles to overcome to get to University, with many facing years of uncertainty.

These students can often need financial support, and without being able to work, the hope of saving enough money to attend university is an ambition far out of reach.

The Sanctuary Scholarship is available to 10 students each year and provides full-tuition fee costs as well as a study grant.

Postgraduate Scholarship

By providing scholarship support to postgraduate students you can unlock a world of opportunity for some of today’s brightest young people.

This will allow talented, hardworking undergraduates to continue their studies and deepen their knowledge during a further year of intensive study on a Master's course, or by pursuing a Ph.D.

With your help, we can relieve this pressure and ensure more students can reach their full potential.

Bespoke Scholarships

The generosity of our alumni, friends, and partners has enabled the University to provide a number of specialist donor-funded scholarships and bursaries for our most talented and deserving students.

Donor-funded scholarships enable supporters to direct their generosity towards an area that is of most significance to them. Their support enables more hardworking students, regardless of background or circumstance, to focus on their studies and fulfil their personal and academic potential- whether that is at an undergraduate, postgraduate, or Ph.D. level.
