Overview

The MSc in Medical Imaging has been developed to offer advanced education in a range of clinical specialities within the diagnostic radiography profession.

These include, but are not limited to:

  • Projection radiography
  • Mammography
  • Interventional Radiography (IR)
  • Computed Tomography (CT)
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

The programme of study will enable you to apply up-to-date technical knowledge, research, scientific, and professional know-how, in line with expectations of the College of Radiographers (CoR) 'Education and Career Framework for the Radiography Profession'.

The programme is aimed at supporting radiographers to:

  • enhance their knowledge and skills in their specialist area of imaging
  • critically evaluate current research and implement best practice
  • reflect on current clinical practices
  • evaluate, inform and enhance service delivery and patient outcomes
  • develop skills in critical thinking
  • develop and enhance skills in leadership, management of people, service evaluation and change

The programme of study is organised on a part-time basis and is dependent on the modules studied at Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma and Final Stage Dissertation.

Modules are delivered by academics with expertise in specialist imaging, clinical specialists, and physicists, with opportunities to learn with and from peers and build networks.

The MSc Medical Imaging programme is completed with a dissertation which will develop your ability to analyse contemporary issues in your area of imaging expertise through collection, processing and analysis of data by way of primary research, or systematic review or service evaluation projects. Additionally, students are supported to disseminate their findings to the radiography profession and wider healthcare audience.

If you have already gained a Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma in an area of Radiography at another UK university and want to build on that to complete your Master's in Medical Imaging at The University of Bradford, please contact us regarding applying for Recognition of Prior Learning. Students will be able to obtain credits for short episodes of study, undertake a single module, or combine studying a choice of modules over time, should they not wish to undertake the full MSc Medical Imaging programme.

Awards and outcomes:

Year 1: Postgraduate Certificate

After successfully completing 60 credits and achieving the award learning outcomes, you will be eligible to:

Year 2: Postgraduate Diploma Medical Imaging

After successfully completing 120 credits and achieving the award learning outcomes, you will be eligible to:

  • exit with the award of Postgraduate Diploma Medical Imaging
  • continue to Year 3 of MSc Medical Imaging

Year 3: Msc Medical Imaging

After successfully completing 180 credits and achieving the award learning outcomes, you will be eligible to:

  • exit with a Degree of Master MSc Medical Imaging

Entry requirements

Students must:

  • be in possession of an undergraduate Radiography degree
  • be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
  • be working as a registered diagnostic radiographer in a UK hospital
  • be in an area of employment that can offer necessary practical experience to facilitate work-based learning
  • have a mentor in their work place that has the appropriate advanced practice skills 

Additional entry requirements

For recognition of prior learning, you will need to provide:

  • Postgraduate certificate
  • Transcript of marks
  • Programme documentation including learning outcomes

English language requirements

You must have an IELTS score of 6.5 (or equivalent) if English is not your first language.

Learning and assessment

Most modules are delivered in the Faculty of Health Studies on block attendance weeks; work based learning modules are supported with directed learning and materials on the virtual learning environment; and MSc dissertations projects are supported by a research supervisor.

Lectures and tutorials are delivered by a range of subject specialists, advanced practitioners, radiologists, physicists and researchers. The University has a PACs suite used in some modules for image interpretation.

  • The development of a reflective portfolio
  • Completion of practice audit
  • Practical examination (OSCE)
  • Computer based examination
  • Seminar Presentation

Financial support

Health Education England (HEE) make a yearly announcement regarding funding for training.

HEE may fund some health courses/modules at the University of Bradford for healthcare staff providing NHS services working within West Yorkshire and Harrogate, against organisational training priorities identified through the organisation's training needs analysis. You are therefore advised to contact the SSPRD Signatory within your organisation regarding their organisational training priorities.
