Learning and assessment

The learning and teaching strategy takes into consideration the programme and module learning outcomes, the nature of the subject, and the need for you to take responsibility for your own learning as part of this advanced taught programme.

The thematic modules are delivered in a combination of:

  • formal lectures
  • workshops
  • extensive practical instruction

You'll progress through a spiral curriculum, with each teaching/assessment block developing and building on your prior learning.

You'll draw upon your underlying knowledge and understanding in the Dissertation - a substantial piece of original, practical-based research, ultimately assessed for its publishable merit.

The assessment strategy is designed to support the learning outcomes of each module. The programme uses a wide range of assessment methods, including:

  • coursework (problem solving, expert witness statements, technical reports, forensic strategy documents, research design, extended writing, continued professional development)
  • open book exams
  • oral presentations and oral evidence to mock crown prosecution service

Assessment elements are structured in a way that allows you to benefit from formative learning prior to summative assessment.

Assessments are designed to demonstrate your relevant knowledge, understanding and professional skills in principal approaches to the application of scientific investigation and analysis techniques in gathering, preserving and evaluating evidence, so that it is suitable for presentation in courts of law.

Your communication skills are tested in both written and oral form in several modules.

Elements of group work are part of specialist modules.
