What is Clearing?

Haven't secured your place at university yet? Want to change your mind?

From 5 July 2025 you can use Clearing to find the perfect course.

How does Clearing work?

Clearing is part of the UCAS application system.

If you already have your exam results but you have no offers, or if you would like to swap to a different course, you can use Clearing.

If you don't get the grades you need for your conditional offers you can use Clearing as soon as you have your results.

It's also an opportunity for anyone without a confirmed place at university to apply for a degree course starting this September.

We will publish a list of all our Clearing courses on 5 July 2025.

Check this list regularly - it will be updated whenever places are filled or made available.

Once you have your exam results, find the course(s) you're interested in. Call our Clearing helpline (from 5 July 2025) to find out if we can offer you a place.

If you get an offer from us, the next step is to add your Clearing choice through UCAS Hub – this counts as acceptance of our offer.

Confused about Clearing terminology?

Some terms you hear during Clearing may be new to you.

Find out what the commonly used words and phrases mean:

You'll be given a Clearing reference number when you start making an application to the University of Bradford through Clearing.

This is so we can find and restart your application quickly if we need to speak to you again. Use this reference number in any follow-up calls or emails after you receive an offer.

UCAS will also give you a different Clearing number if you're eligible for Clearing - you can find your Clearing number by logging into your UCAS Hub. The University of Bradford does not need to take this number - we just need your Personal ID number for online applications and when applying over the phone.

The Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) manages your university applications in the UK.

You can view the status of your applications in your UCAS Hub.

Entry requirements are the qualifications or grades you need for us to offer or confirm your place on a course.

You'll need a certain number of UCAS Tariff Points for each course.

There may be additional entry requirements, such as GCSE grades or having studied certain subjects or modules, and some courses may also require an interview before you are offered a place.

You will need a certain number of UCAS Tariff Points to recieve an offer for the course you want to study.

Each grade you achieve in a recognised qualification (e.g. A levels, T levels, BTEC, Access) will give you a specific number of points.

You can check how many points your grades (or your predicted grades) will give you with the UCAS calculator.

This is an offer of a university place based on you achieving certain qualifications or grades.

If you meet the conditions of your offer, your place becomes unconditional. You'll receive confirmation of your place at university, and it's time to start celebrating!

These are the grades teachers (or other advisors) think you will get in your exams.

As applications to university are made before you have your actual results, predicted grades are used when you apply for courses.

You may find you have done better than predicted and want to swap your current course for something different in Clearing. If you do not achieve the grades you need, you may be offered a place on an alternative course or be released into Clearing.

We'll sometimes offer you a place on an alternative course if you don't get the grades required for your original offer.

This alternative course allows you to explore similar career options and use many of the same skills.

If you have applied to the University of Bradford already and do not get the grades you need on Results Day, you may see an offer for a new course in your UCAS Hub. If you would like to find out more about this course, you can chat to our Clearing team.

If you’re unsure about your alternative course, you can explore other courses through Clearing before making a final decision.

Some of our Clearing courses will require you to be interviewed via video call (usually Microsoft Teams) before we can offer you a place.

The interview is your chance to show us why you would be a great fit for your chosen course. Here are a few tips to help you prepare for an interview:

  • be prepared to talk about your work experience
  • think about your motivations for studying the course
  • think about what your career aspirations are and how they align to the course you have applied for
