Diagnostic radiography students at the University of Bradford recently participated in an innovative dementia education session that combined a 90-minute clinical simulation alongside a 90-minute lecture.

This approach provided students with a comprehensive learning experience, blending technical skills with theoretical knowledge.

The clinical simulation was facilitated by Erin Berry, a Clinical Teacher in Radiography, and co-delivered by people with dementia and their supporters. Students were asked to carry out  a mock low back x-ray.

Following the simulation, students attended a lecture delivered by Ana and Clare designed to develop their understanding of dementia and person-centred care. This lecture provided the necessary theoretical background, ensuring that students could integrate their practical experiences with foundational knowledge.

Feedback from both the Experts and the students was overwhelmingly positive.  The Experts told us how meaningful it is to contribute to the education of future healthcare professionals.

It is the second year that we successfuly deliver this co-produced dementia education to Diagnostic Radiography students. The impact of our approach - taught theory and simulation-based education co-produced with experts by experience, has shown to  effectively improve students’ knowledge, confidence and attitudes in caring for people living with dementia. More details can be read in our recently published paper: https://www.radiographyonline.com/article/S1078-8174(24)00274-8/fulltext

Our experts by experience play a leading role in our education provision within the Centre for Applied Dementia Studies. People with dementia and their supporters are involved in all aspects, including in the delivery of education, marking students’ assessments, reviewing students work, developing the programme and designing new content.

Thanks to our Experts by Experience: Michael, Julie, Paul, Lawrence, Elaine and Jill for their invaluable contributions to the radiography session.
