Making a difference: empowering communities through technology and AI

I’m Sakinat, and I'm currently studying for my Master's degree in MSc Applied Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics.

My journey spans through education, digital marketing and brand design. I’m passionate about using technology to solve real-world problems that businesses or organisations face. In this blog, I’ll share my goal of making a difference and how Bradford is playing a role in helping me achieve that goal.

The difference I want to make

To me, making a difference means creating opportunities and providing solutions to the problems people are facing. Many businesses and organisations have a lot to offer, but due to their lack of digital knowledge, they are unable to show what they are capable of.

I would like to help these businesses leverage the digital tools we have today to help them grow, create more job opportunities and transform their businesses and lives. I am also interested in sharing general knowledge about artificial intelligence and technology with women and young girls to empower them in their businesses. Having worked in different fields in the past, I see technology as a tool that can be applied across all sectors to drive meaningful change.

Change starts with the everyday

Making a difference is not just about grand gestures, you can always start at whatever phase of life you are in. I realised I can use my current skills to help the businesses and organisations around me, which is why I have volunteered to create digital strategies for various organisations to help them with their online presence.

Recently, I was invited to teach a group of girls with graphic design at Techy Muslimah, which I accepted. I believe that sharing knowledge is an important way of making an impact, no matter how small. It was rewarding to see a struggling business implement the knowledge I’ve shared to improve their online presence.

Making a difference in society

As an Applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Analytics student, my long-term vision is to integrate AI and digital strategy to create a sustainable impact. One of the projects I’m working on for a module I’m taking this semester, ‘Technopreneurship and Innovation’, is a health app that leverages AI. Working on this project has further demonstrated the potential that AI and technology have in transforming many businesses and organisations. I believe that if I can master these tools and share them with the underrepresented communities, it will empower them by allowing them to optimise their work and get better results.

Recently, I drafted a digital strategy for a non-profit organisation in my hometown in Nigeria that is facing certain financial challenges. I suggested they create an online presence to reach a wider global audience and optimise their fundraising activities. If successful, this could help the organisation raise more funds and expand its support for underprivileged communities, which is deeply fulfilling.

How Bradford is helping me make a difference

Bradford’s diversity made me feel at home. As a Nigerian who grew up in Kuwait, I appreciate the multicultural aspect of the city. I’ve listened to a diverse set of people speak about the difference they have made, and are still making, and how Bradford has been a factor in that. This has motivated me to continue my journey and not to give up. Seeing organisations effectively use technology here has encouraged me in my goal of optimising business processes, particularly in Nigeria.

Making a difference is about taking action, no matter how small. You might not see the impact immediately, but small, consistent actions when accumulated can make a big change. You do not always have to wait for the perfect moment. We never know who might benefit from what we have to give. Utilise the skills and knowledge you have to make an impact in someone’s life, or even the whole world.
